30+ Years of the Americans with Disabilities Act

LaWanda H. Cook July 06, 2021

We have been celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the ADA all year! This landmark, civil rights legislation is the most far-reaching when it comes to protecting the rights of people with disabilities to participate in all aspects of community life.

As we look ahead to July 26, 2021, and one more, particularly challenging, year with this law on the books, we wanted to encourage you to check out the New York Times series The A.D.A. at 30: Beyond the Law’s Promise. These articles address topics such as what disability advocates learned from other civil rights movements, considerations when disclosing a disability, and the growing pride among people with disabilities. In highlighting both the disability rights movement and the lived experiences of disability, this collection of stories notes the many gains that have been made—as well as the work yet to be done—to ensure equitable opportunity for and inclusion of people with disabilities.
